Today I turn 54 and so, maybe I’m a little biased, but I tend to think it’s true that the 50’s are Fabulous!
Or maybe it’s because since I’ve turned 50, I’ve lost almost 100 pounds and therefore, in my 40’s I was way more tired and had less energy than I do in my 50’s.
I’ve heard some women say that by the time they turned 50 they’ve come into their own, as in, they’re old enough not to care what others think, they’ve grown confident enough to speak their mind, to say NO when they don’t want to do something, to take charge of their lives, or to let go of the guilt they used to feel. But I’ve pretty much always had that confidence and not felt guilty for taking care of myself every once in a while. So…why have the 50’s been better for me?
The best thing about being in my 50’s is wisdom. It’s not that I make any claim to being some philosophical or theological genius, but it’s just the experience I’ve gained. Being able to look back over the past 35 years with some perspective gives one a confidence that a 20 something can’t have. To know that all the drama of the 20’s will work out. So much has already been decided and done, so the anxiety of what’s going to happen is gone. That’s very freeing.
But it can also make one complacent or worse, depressed that there is nothing new over the horizon. But if you can keep trying to learn new things, TRY new things, remain open to new adventures and new ideas, then the future can still be very exciting. I’m excited about what the future will bring. I’ve got my kids’ college graduation ceremonies to attend, more traveling, and hopefully some day I’ll have grandkids to love. PLUS, I’m excited about a new series I’m developing for Blaze about Texas Rangers. What’s not to love about a cowboy who’s also a cop?
